We Could Be So Good is the first Cat Sebastian book I’ve ever read, and boy is it a good one. Everything about it just works very, very well. Sebastian’s prose is witty, littered with banter, and moves at a pace brisk enough to keep you hanging onto every word.
As characters, Nick and Andy are perfect examples of those complete and utter idiots that you just can’t help loving. Hopelessly in love with each other, wholly ignorant of how the other feels, and absolutely oblivious to painfully obvious things. They’re just an utter delight. Sebastian switches back and forth between their respective points of view, too, giving readers the chance to truly understand both characters – where they’re coming from, what they’re feeling, and why they’re acting the way they do. It’s very easy to understand why Nick and Andy fall for each other and what their connection is. Sebastian shows that evolution from strangers to friends to lovers with such gentle softness that it’ll make even the hardest of hearts swoon.
If I had a complaint, it’s that the book’s certainly light on plot. I know that’s the case for most romantic comedies, but I do feel there’s a bit more that could’ve been done with Nick and Andy being reporters in the 1950s tackling a story about police corruption. The novel flirts with how the police targeted gay men of the era, and while I’m not saying I want the book to be darker or anything, I do wish Sebastian had followed that idea just a little bit further.
But still, We Could Be So Good is just such a delightful read that it’s hard to be annoyed by anything else. It’s the literary equivalent of comfort food – in the best way possible. It makes you feel all warm and cozy, and it’s such a light, breezy read from start to finish. A perfect summer read and a perfect read for anyone who loves historical-tinged romances.
4.5 out of 5 wands.
